Is Linux A Better Choice Than Windows
January 2nd 2012 -
When it comes to operating systems for most computers, except for people who like their Macintosh, according to most people, Windows is the only operating system that exists. A free system, called Linux, can be downloaded and used by anyone, without any charge, and it is liked by a lot of people. By looking at both Windows and Linux, together, we will be able to tell what they have in common, as well as their differences.
Linux is a very good OS and is very easy to use if you are a techie. However, this does not mean that the average person can jump right in. The creators of the software, Linux, designed it for people that interact with software, not people that play with Windows. Microsoft designed Windows to be user-friendly for the average person who wants to utilize technology without having to actually understand what it does. Linux is actually updated year after year, with new versions appearing for download quite often. This operating system is different from Windows in that installation is not that simple. With Linux, it may not so obvious which version is best for you, unless you do some research. If you’re ready to do the legwork, you might end up preferring Linux, but at first it will take some effort. The main advantage of Linux is that it is open source software and that means that it is free for you to use. Windows, though, costs lots of money. The latest version of Windows 7, if you would like an example, will cost almost a hundred dollars. Even though most modern PCs will come with the most recent version of Windows installed on it, you can be sure that you are still paying for it. With Linux, though, all you have to do is download it and put it to use. "Open source" also means that you are allowed to both copy and then distribute the software you’ve chosen without having to worry about infringing on any copyright laws. Of course, this advantage may not be obvious to people who are buying a new computer that will already have an operating system installed. If you want to use Linux, you are able to purchase a cheaper computer that doesn’t have Windows on it and then download Linux for free and save some money.
If you are tired of the security problems with Windows, you might want to try Linux because their security is much better. When you are looking at computers and security is an issue, then Windows would be your last choice. Being so popular is one reason, and the way it is designed is the other. If you have windows, then you already know that you are dealing with viruses, spyware, malware, and even other programs that cause problems. Viruses and malware are almost never an issue with Linux users, but there is no computer that is 100% secure. You don’t have to constantly worry about your privacy being invaded or always updating your anti-virus software. Linux is definitely safer than Windows, but you still need to share personal information while using common sense. If you want to choose an operating system there are a lot of factors that you need to keep in mind. Deciding between Linux and Windows depends on whether you want the flexibility that Linux can offer you or the extended compatibility that is offered through Windows for the different software programs. This is just the tip of the
iceberg in terms of why you should select either Windows or Linux for your computer.
